Impression Evidence

fingerprintThe Impression Evidence Section was formerly refered to as the fingerprint section. This section is devoted to the detection, development, enhancement, and comparison of Impression evidence.

The Impression Evidence Section is staffed by a Supervising Criminalist, Three Latent Print Examiners, and one Questioned Document Examiner.

Latent prints, tire tracks, footwear impressions are all examples of impression evidence. In addition to normal casework, this section assists local agencies by responding to major crime scenes across the state of Utah.

This section of the laboratory has the ability to search unknown fingerprints against the database of known arestees using a system refered to as AFIS. Unsolved cases are submitted to AFIS for a computerized search against fingerprint records in a ten state region, known as the Western Identification Network - (WIN).

The Impression evidence section is equipped with various chemical methods that are designed to develop latent prints on various surfaces. In addition, digital imaging assists Examiners to enhance images, make enlargements, and prepare courtroom displays.
